Cache’s First Birthday in New Orleans

If you follow me on instagram, you already know that we decided to travel to New Orleans for Cache’s first birthday rather than throwing a birthday party. At first, this decision was a monetary one. To us, it only made sense to sink that money into a 3-day trip rather than a party that lasts for a few hours. Then, I reminded myself of all the meticulous planning it would take and how we’d have to lug party supplies to Mississippi (where all our family and friends live) so we decided that the trip was for us. The funny part is that we probably ended up spending more on the trip, but I’m SO GLAD WE DID IT. I’m so glad that when I think back to Cache’s first birthday, it will be eating beignets and watching jellyfish at the aquarium. Not only was this a special trip for him, but it was also special for us! It was nice to get away and take that time to really soak him up.

I can’t lie – I felt really guilty at first. While I don’t exactly remember my first birthday party, I’ve looked back on photos of that day, and I felt that I was stripping Cache from that experience. But now I can say without a shadow of doubt, we did the right thing for us.

If you have a young child like us, just a heads up that he wasn’t crazy about the zoo and napped about half of the time. It was hot, crowded, and the animals were really hard to spot. It wasn’t our favorite. If you do decide to go to the zoo, bring extra water, a hat, and sunscreen for baby. The aquarium was on another level. It was so much fun (and also air conditioned) and he loved pushing his face up to the glass to see the fish! I highly recommend!

We had such a good time that now we’re considering doing a birthday trip every year! I’m already planning on where we should go next year!
